Children develop speech sounds in different ways and at different rates. Some children’s speech may be harder for others to understand at times, and this can change as they grow. There are many reasons why children may use speech sounds differently. Speech development is a gradual process, and children may use patterns or variations as they learn to speak.

This workshop supports parents and carers to understand these differences and learn ways to support clear and confident communication in everyday life.

Aim of this workshop

  • Build understanding of how speech sounds develop over time
  • Explore ways to support your child to be understood and express themselves confidently
  • Learn practical, play‑based strategies that build on your child’s strengths
  • Increase your confidence in supporting communication in everyday interactions

This workshop is for parents or carers whose child:

  • is under 7 years old

  • is still developing their speech sounds and may not yet be using them consistently

  • would benefit from support to help their speech become clearer over time
  • can engage with activities for short periods of time.

Screen time

Screens can be a big part of children's lives. They include televisions, phones, tablets and computers. Screens can be fun and educational, but too much screen time can affect how children and young people develop, learn and communicate. It's important to find a balance between using technology and supporting your child's development.

Speech sounds

Speech sounds are the individual sounds we use to make words. The sounds we make when we speak are made from the voice box (larynx), mouth muscles, jaw, lips, teeth, and tongue. In English we have 46 sounds for 26 letters of the alphabet.

Developing language

As children grow older, their list of words they know becomes bigger and more complicated. They learn new ways to put words together into sentences. Their understanding and comprehension of spoken, non-spoken and written communication also improves.
